KO8 | single-family house

Built of laminated solid timber external walls this house in Telemark, Norway, has a stong focus on energy-efficiency and sustainability, in the choice of materials and planning solutions. The orientation of the building and its form are a direct response to the program – conservatory, central chimney, walls tilted to optimise solar thermal panels. The kitchen opens into the conservatory, which connects with the garden. The childrens rooms both open onto a shared playarea. On the upper floor the living room area opens up to the panoramic views of the mountains behind, with large openings and a balcony from which the evening sun may be enjoyed. In order for comfortable room acoustics to be achieved, black felt mats are hidden behind the wooden panelling of the living room ceiling. The sleeping quarter is connected by a central corridor which is lit up by cove lighting.
